These stories should appeal especially to college pre paratory students of the senior high school . The questions which follow each story are essentially a part of a program of learning . We have attempted to pose questions that will lead the student into thinking : finding evidence , drawing conclusions , and answering intelligently . Perhaps there is some relation between the nature of these questions and those of the works on programed instruction . Many of the questions are designed to suggest answers by drawing upon knowl edge the student already possesses but which he may not have used in similar contexts . In several instances , a ques tion that may have caused initial difficulty is answered in directly in subsequent questions in the same section . For a few stories there are many questions . Such stories may well be read first as the questions for those stories were designed to introduce technical terms , to help the student to look for significant details , and to point out techniques used by the authors . Other stories , such as Faulkner’s ” The Tall Men , ” which might be read toward the end of the unit or course , are followed by questions of a more general , philosophic nature . It is suggested that the teacher begin with such stories as ” The Tell – Tale Heart , ” ” The Minister’s Black Veil , ” ” The Tale , ” ” The Rivals , ” and ” Haircut . ” Students should study the questions and formulate their answers in advance of class discussion .
