WHEN Hitler’s army marched into Austria in the spring of 1938, Prince Starhemberg, who was in Switzerland, was immediately. outlawed by the Nazis and all his estates confiscated.At the outbreak of war, he offered his services to France and joined the French Air Force.

The manuscript of « Between Hitler and Mussolini” was started at this time, and he had to leave it in France when he came to this country in one of the last British bombers to make the flight. In England, Prince Star-hemberg rewrote his book, and it is printed here substantially as he left it when, as an officer in the Free French Air Force, he was ordered to active service with his unit.

There is, of course, much more that Prince Starhem-berg could have added to make his book a fuller history of the momentous happenings he recounts, and he had it in mind to do this before his departure. It is hoped, however, that what he has written and what is now published in this volume constitutes an important historical document.
