About The Norton Anthology of American Literature

The original Norton Anthology of American Literature is one of the richest and most reliable sources of American and now English Literature on the one hand, and the Literature in English on the other.

The literary production of the originally non-English and non-American authors, who have been writing in English during the last two centuries, has usually been a significant part of a literature that is now becoming increasingly international in essence, universal by nature, and an inevitable part of human heritage.

The short history of the American civilization and the shorter history of the literature it offers to the world, has ironically but sufficiently structured a foundation, upon which, have been established great and unforgettable masterworks one after another and year after year.

Appreciating the true voice of the pure American Literature, the present edition of the Major Authors attempts to present the authors and the texts that instructors most want to teach on the one hand and the students most need to be acquainted with, on the other. It was thus an inevitable observation and undeniable consideration to concentrate on just the top American authors, ( except for some novelists of the Postmodern period, not included in the original Norton Anthology of American Literature) and the more major ones, to be included in the present edition. Yet the authors excluded do not certainly lack literary value, but the Major Authors is inevitably too limited to offer enough space for all the authors, some of whom having produced texts too long for inclusion.

Naturally, neither all the authors in the original anthology nor complete works of the selected authors are included in the present edition. However, still a true taste of each chosen author is targeted, through the complete introductions, head notes, and foot notes smartly going with literary, historical, political and intellectual events, related to each author and/or key concepts that are all adapted from the original edition without any change.
